Moab, Utah

Moab Utah Recreation Area Information
Located in southeastern Utah, Moab has become a mecca for the adventurous. Moab was first settled in 1855 by Mormons who quickly abandoned their remote outpost because of conflict with the area's Native American population. It was resettled in 1876. Moab and its people have carved an existence as changing as the eroded desert around it. Moab has served as a river-irrigated fruit growing center, a dock for ill-fated steam powered paddle boats on the Colorado River, and in the 1950's, a uranium boom town. In the 1980's the uranium market fell and Moab was forced to look to other means of economic income. Some locals decided to build a bicycle shop, rent bicycles and other guided tours. Tourism became a significant part of Moab's economy.
Off roading in Moab
When it comes to off roading, Moab is arguably one of the best riding places in the entire world. There are over 30 mapped off roading trails in Moab, from mildly challenging to absolutely spine tingling. Off road activities in Moab truly rival any place on earth.
Native American Heritage in Moab
Native American heritage surrounds us in Moab. Woven subtly in the patterned colors of the landscape are traces and clues that we are neither the first nor last visitors to seek of the treasures of this region.
This whole area was once home to the Parianuche, or Grand River Ute people. Other groups left carved messages and artifacts bespeaking rich traditions and deeply meaningful connections to the area. These include the Desert Archaic , the Freemont and transient populations such as the Ancestral Pueblo people who called themselves Hitsatsinom.
Today, cultural attractions include ancient ruins, intriguing rock art panels, rich traditional art and exotic treasures available for viewing or for purchase. Much can be learned from our living neighbors, the Navajo, Ute, Hopi, Paiute, Zuni, Mexican and others, who live and work in every town in the Southwest. To travel with humility and respect amid the native people's subtle philosophies and mannerisms can open many doorways to opportunity as well as to our larger selves.
Wherever our feet touch in this desert land, we well find irreplaceable natural treasures, dinosaur tracks, stone artifacts, wagon tracks, signs of ranchers and miners or wild creatures who are always at the heart of things. As modern sojourners, we are asked to give something back in return for what we may experience, i.e., to follow the laws protecting all resources from damage or theft, to help preserve what is fragile and precious, and to leave things exactly as we found them. Thank you and enjoy!
The La Sal Mountains
The La Sal Mountains grace the southeast view of Moab. The second highest range in Utah, these alpine mountains offer excellent opportunities for hiking, camping, cycling, mountain climbing, cross country and hut-to-hut skiing, fishing, ATV riding, and are a perfect place to escape the summer heat. The La Sals also serve as the beautiful backdrop for Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Campsites are available at Oowah Lake and Warner Lake on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Colorado River
The Colorado River is located 2 miles north of Moab. The river cuts through a red rock gorge with incomparable vistas, meandering along in some sections, rushing boldly in others. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing and jet boat tours abound. The drive along the Colorado River - Scenic Byway 128 and Scenic Byway 279 - offer incredible views, petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks, arches, famous movie locations, red rock spires, and rock towers that loom 1,500 ft above the valley floor.
