Nothing attracts crowds like a crowd. And there’s almost always a crowd at Potato Salad Hill during the Easter Jeep Safari. However, most of them aren’t interested in seeing you make it to the top unharmed. They want to see spectacular breakage and violent rollovers. Many of them may not even own a 4x4, just locals looking for action. In most cases, it’s easier to go up the right side. Off to the left is for brave souls with wheelbases well over 100 inches. The hill is very deceptive. It doesn’t look hard but the surface is slick, covered with round ball bearing-like rocks, and has pot holes in all the wrong places. It’s also slanted just a bit to the left, into a ravine. Most rollovers on Potato Salad Hill are due to a failing axleshaft or U-joint when you’re at the critical top part of the climb. Careful driving with light throttle is usually the best method to make it up.
Potato Salad Hill is a local area not on any of the official runs but is a popular hangout in the afternoon. It's just a loose, off-camber climb, which many a vehicle has scaled, but it's also a great photo opportunity for rollover shots. We chanced upon this freshly toppled YJ seconds after it was pushed back over by the crowd. We later saw it on the street and it was sporting a plastic bag as part of the windshield.
