Nothing attracts crowds like a crowd. And there’s almost always a crowd at Potato Salad Hill during the Easter Jeep Safari. However, most of them aren’t interested in seeing you make it to the top unharmed. They want to see spectacular breakage and violent rollovers. Many of them may not even own a 4x4, just locals looking for action. In most cases, it’s easier to go up the right side. Off to the left is for brave souls with wheelbases well over 100 inches. The hill is very deceptive. It doesn’t look hard but the surface is slick, covered with round ball bearing-like rocks, and has pot holes in all the wrong places. It’s also slanted just a bit to the left, into a ravine. Most rollovers on Potato Salad Hill are due to a failing axleshaft or U-joint when you’re at the critical top part of the climb. Careful driving with light throttle is usually the best method to make it up.
Potato Salad Hill is a local area not on any of the official runs but is a popular hangout in the afternoon. It's just a loose, off-camber climb, which many a vehicle has scaled, but it's also a great photo opportunity for rollover shots. We chanced upon this freshly toppled YJ seconds after it was pushed back over by the crowd. We later saw it on the street and it was sporting a plastic bag as part of the windshield.

Build for it:
What works on Potato Salad Hill isn’t necessarily what works out on rough trails. Wheelbase can be your buddy here. Jeeps with less than 100 inches will generally need to work the right side and have lockers front and rear. Lower-than-normal air pressures in tires 33 inches or larger are a good bet if you can avoid sideloads. With the right air pressure on a Jeep with a 110-inch or longer wheelbase you may be able to make it with only a rear locker.
How to die:
Be a crowd pleaser. Hit the left side with the gas pedal mashed in your high-horse CJ-5 with stock axles. If you somehow make it to the top without failure, repeat every half-hour until death occurs.
Fun Fact:
Your trail leader may offer to let you go over and play on Potato Salad Hill either before or after the the main portion of the trail is completed. He will probably advise you that it is no longer an official part of the trail and is very dangerous. Listen to him. Several 4X4s roll there every year and countless more break gears, driveshafts and axles. Potato Salad Hill is a series of gravel covered rock steps that just gets more difficult every year. The name comes from a Potato Salad that bounced out of the back of a pickup that tried the obstacle years ago.
